Welcome to the blogosphere Don! This will be fun! I'll think of some things and get back to you. By the way, I see on yahoo that IBM just unveiled the world fasted supercomputer....your not holding anything out on us are you. Is this thing in your basement? :)

Ok, how about a title and definition of your hermeneutical method? And how its different than another "popular" hermeneutical method of interpretation.

Todd,
Fast is good, but if somebody would make a computer that could swim, I'd be interested!

Definition?
I'm hoping that the fog will take shape as we go along. What about "there's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip" or "light, more light".

But seriously as regarding any method of interpretation, I want to explore what the Scriptures compel us to embrace, vs what they only suggest, vs what they forbid.

This is just what I need! I run a little women's group, so this will be a neat place for me to grow and learn... as well as come up with some interesting questions. Plus, when you get these discussions going, you get this real urge and passion to jump more deeply into God's Word. Looking forward to discussing!

I'm looking forward to having more theoogical discussions in what little time I have available! Hope you all are doing well!

So Don, any ideas on the first topic?

Hi Dad, I have a topic for discussion. Lately in bible study we have been studying the ways the Holy Spirit reveals Gods will for us (mainly through the Word) and the emphasis is on personal interpretation of verses that "jump out" at us. What place does personal meaning (and application) of the bible in our lives versus the in depth study of the the bibles interpretation of itself? Is one more accurate and fruitful?

Hi Don,the link worked !! lEANNA the Word works best if you just open it randomly, point your finger down with your eyes closed..and oh ,pray before you do it!!

Leanna, you raise a number of good questions which could be rephrased as follows.
1) Since we come to the Bible expecting a blessing, how do we know whether the Spirit is specifically directing us based on a text, or whether we are being warmed by the general blessing of being in the Word? Especially when we might put into action what we learned?

2) Is it over the edge when, in an existential moment, some verse “jumps out” at us?

3) I think personal meaning and application will be enhanced to the degree that we understand the Scriptures. Personal meaning without SOME principles of interpretation may be totally disastrous.

Lets look at the earnest believer who got up early with a desire to serve God that day, and started his devotions praying “Lord, reveal thy will for me today” then closing his eyes, flips open the Bible and points to “today’s” word of direction.

The text read, “And he (Judas) went away and hanged himself” Matt 27:5b
‘Oh, this can’t be right!’ So he closed his eyes again and pointed.
The next text read, “Go, and do thou likewise” Luke 10:37b
‘Oh, Lord, what are you trying to say to me? I’ll try again.’
The last text read, “Do all things without murmurings and questionings” Phil 2:14
‘I better just go back to bed!’

What’s the problem here? What principles are absent?
